Because knowing is half of the battle!

Fleas and Ticks are in full force! Are your pets prepared? Summer time can be a challenge in our area, so learn a little more about these common parasites, because knowing is half of the battle!

Ticks are different than fleas.  They have different life cycles, need different homes and temperatures, live longer and change hosts.  Understanding the way each parasite lives and dies will help you to know how to deal with them, avoid them and kill them!

FLEA FACTS

Fact:  95% of the flea population is in the environment. YOU WON'T SEE THEM!

Myth: Fleas jump from pet to pet

Fact:  Fleas typically stay on ONE host, they do not readily move from pet-to-pet. Fleas seen on people are usually fleas recently emerged from cocoons.

Fact: Most common wild animal to carry and spread fleas is the Opossum.

Myth: Products like Frontline Plus stop fleas and ticks from jumping on my pet.

Fact: Flea and tick products are made to kill the parasites once they have already jumped onto your pet. They do not serve as a repellent.

Fact: The majority of a flea infestation is found in the pet's environment (house and yard).

Myth: Ticks should be removed with matches, Vaseline, or by twisting a certain direction.

Fact: Ticks should be removed by grasping it with tweezers or tick removal device and firmly pulling the tick free.

Fact: Once a female flea jumps on a pet it lays eggs within 24 hours and can lay up to 40 to 50 eggs/day for an average of 50 days! That's 2500 eggs!

Myth: A flea infestation can be eliminated within a few days.

Fact: Once treatment has begun it can take three to eight weeks (occasionally longer) before the flea infestation is eliminated. This is because the home and/or yard are infested with flea eggs, larvae, pupae and adults emerging daily.  Remember, the fleas you see on your pet today came from flea eggs laid three to eight weeks ago.

TICKS

A tick lives for multiple seasons, changing hosts at least three times over the course of two years.

The smallest tick, called "seed" tick, is actually a young tick that is looking for it's first meal.  The larger tick is an adult who is preparing to reproduce.

Ticks can be VERY difficult to kill with chemicals.  In the unlikely event that you find yourself dealing with an infestation of ticks, call a professional to help you!

There are steps you can take to make sure your pet and your home are protected from fleas!

Begin with flea preventative that kills fleas found on the pet and prevents new fleas from settling in.

Products we carry are:

-Frontline Plus- is a topical application for dogs and cats that lasts 30 days and kills ticks, flea eggs, larva and adult fleas.

-Comfortis- kills adult fleas on dogs through an oral medication that lasts 30 days.

-Revolution- kills flea adults and eggs, heartworms, and ear mites on dogs and cats through a topical application that lasts 30 days. (Also kills ticks on dogs, and hookworms and roundworms in cats)

-Capstar- kills adult fleas on dogs and cats through an oral medication that lasts 24 hours.

In addition, treat the environment to help prevent infestations.

-Vacuum frequently- especially carpets and other soft coverings where your pet tends to lounge.

(Don't forget the car!)

-Wash pet items in hot water- beds, blankets, toys

-Use area treatment sprays, such as Knockout.

(For an infestation, the best option is to hire a professional)
