AUGUST PET OF THE MONTH

Back to Pet of the Month

Congratulations to our August pet of the month, little Lola, or Lola Isabella Skywalker!

Lola is a beautiful, energetic beagle puppy. One Sunday she vomited up what mom and dad thought was an entire cassette tape, but unfortunately she continued to vomit and was not her normal energetic self.

When she came to see us she was definitely not the bouncy puppy we were used to seeing and her belly was very tender when Dr. Forbes palpated it.  X-rays were taken and there was a section of her small intestines that looked like a tube of cloth bound around a string, like a ?Scrunchie?.  This is known as plication of the bowels and is often an indication of a linear or string-like foreign body.

Lola was immediately placed on intravenous fluids to improve her hydration and to make her more stable for surgery that afternoon.  Once in surgery we found that she did indeed still have some cassette tape remaining and it had bound up her intestines from her stomach all the way to her colon.  It took 4 incisions to remove all of the tape taking extra care so that it did not cut through the intestinal wall.  Fortunately her intestines were healthy enough that we did not need to remove any, but she did end up with an infection in her abdomen that had to be flushed and treated with antibiotics.

Lola recovered well after surgery and was quickly back to her energetic self.  Mom and Dad were VERY happy to have their little girl back and are still trying to figure out where she found that cassette tape!
