Canine Influenza Virus

There has been a lot of talk about Canine Influenza in the news lately, so we wanted to provide you with some credible sources of information.  This is an upper respiratory virus that causes signs similar to kennel cough in most cases (cough with possible fever, nasal discharge and sometimes reduced appetite); however, in 1-5% of cases it can be very severe and progress to pneumonia.  About 20% of the dogs never show any signs.

A vaccine has recently been conditionally approved. (Conditionally because all of the studies on the vaccine have not been finalized).  We are not giving that vaccine at this time because the exposure to our clients' pets is minimal and the vaccine is very new.  (We have not seen any cases here).  The vaccine does not prevent infection, but reduces the severity of disease- similar to the Bordetella vaccine for kennel cough.   Pets who are at higher risks are those traveling to dog shows, staying in boarding facilities/shelters or visiting "day care" facilities.  If you are interested in having your pet vaccinated please contact our office to make arrangements.
